Job Title:  Secondary Counselor

Reports to:  Site Administrator(s)

Compensation:  Teacher's Salary Schedule plus an extra duty contract of two weeks before and one week after the school year. 

Overtime Status:  Exempt

Salary based on Current Negotiated Teacher Salary Schedule.

 

Guidance Counselor

Performance Responsibilities:

 

1.  Assists students in their course and subject selection.

2.  Obtain and disseminates occupational/post-secondary information to students and to classes studying occupations.

3.  Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation.

4.  Work to discover and develop the special abilities of students and to resolve students' educational handicaps.

5.  Register students new to the school and orients them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning.

6.  Work to prevent students from dropping out of school.

7.  Help students evaluate career interests and choices.

8.  Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.

9.  Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such areas as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.

10.  Plan guidance field trips to schools, colleges, and industry for interested students.

11.  Guide students in their participation in school and community activities.

12.  Maintain student records and protects their confidentiality.

13.  Supervise the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications.

14.  Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships.

15.  Provide student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board’s policy on student records.

16.  Meet with parents to discuss enrollment, grades, and career paths. 

17.  Assist in the orientation of new faculty members.

18.  Provide in-service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.

19.  Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the counseling office.

20.  Take an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.

21.  Interprets the guidance program to the community.

22.  Arrange for summer school work.

23.  Collaborate with the school leadership team regarding program development.

24.  Coordinate with district test coordinator site, state, and other diagnostic tests.

25.  Perform credit checks for all assigned students.

26.  Coordinate and gather information for Special Services (referrals, eligibility, interventions, IEP's, and auxiliary services.)

27.  Network with other counselors.

28.  Help coordinate crisis intervention procedures. 

29.  Assists with special projects as directed by the principal.

30.  Perform other related duties as directed by the principal and/or district administrators.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

 

1.  Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field

2.  Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate

3.  Master's Degree in Counseling or related field  

4.  Valid Oklahoma School Counselor Certificate or

5.  Emergency Certified in School Counseling or

6.  Alternative Certification in School Counseling

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:  Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, and laws applicable to education and special education.  Ability to follow all district policies and procedures.  Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done.  Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators.  Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player.  Ability to document records accurately.  Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees.  Ability to listen effectively.  

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common academic journals and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the community.  Ability to effectively present information to district leaders, public groups, and/or boards of education. 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to apply intermediate mathematical concepts.  Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability, and validity.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 

 

OTHER SKILLS/EXPECTATIONS:  Develops cooperative and functional relationships with district staff and the public; maintains consistent and punctual attendance; ensures job responsibilities are met competently and within established deadlines.
