Department: Assistant Transportation Director
Reports To: Director of Transporation
Number of Days: 11 months
Overtime Status: Exempt
Job Objectives: Assisists the District's transportation Director in operations and activities in a manner which promotes safety and efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Education or Business, Masters degree in administration preferred and/or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of three years in transportation and/or at the building level.
- Commercial Drivers' License-Class B with P (passenger) and S (school bus) endorsement required.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.
- Assists in the planning and coordination of routes and schedules to achieve the greatest degree of safety and service consistent with maximum utilization of vehicles and personnel.
- Maintains records concerning mileage and passenger data and related to cost information.
- Provides student discipline when related to transportation.
- Assists in the evaluations of drivers and staff.
- Ensures that all vehicles are properly equipped and maintained for student safety.
- Requires that all routes are pre-run prior to the start of the school year to ensure on-time arrival and dismissal.
- Participates in recommendations for vehicle and equipment purchases.
- Assists in the development of training programs for all personnel.
- Schedules drivers for the SPS "Book Bus"
- Acts as liaison with parents, administrators, and employees for concerns and special requests.
- Displays abiliity to work collaboratively with others on a team.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.

- Ability to direct and manage budgets, personnel, and operations for a large fleet of vehicles.
- Exhibit strong organization, communication, and planning skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of a school district's transportation program, including operations, vehicle maintainance, fleet management computerized routing, and scheduling of vehicles.
- Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of safe school bus transportation.
- Ability to resolve parents, school administrator, and/or employee complaints about transportation and related issues.
- Capacity to evaluate and analyze student population data and it's impact on schedules, bus routes and location of bus stops.
- Ability to interpret and develop transportation policy and procedures at the state and local level.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists with supervision, oversees and manages a district transportation program and staff associated with it. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include assisting with interviewing, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common academic/transportation/mechancial journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to effectively present information to district leaders, public groups, and/or boards of education.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply intermediate mathematical concepts.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS/EXPECTATIONS: Develops cooperative and functional relationships with district staff and the public; maintains consistent and punctual attendance; insures job responsibilities are met competently and within established deadlines.
